PUNK Royale

About us

Punk Royale is raw energy in its most concentrated form. It’s smoky, fast and close. Boundless, intimate and unapologetically messy. We see you, and you see us.

The food is bloody good. The service is bloody brilliant. No bullshit. It’s all about giving you a night you won’t forget.

We’re an international team creating the kind of restaurant experience no one else dares to offer. Star-level flavours, at a down-to-earth price. A place where you can be yourself and let go. Everything other restaurants aren’t, or don’t dare to be.

Once upon a time there was fine dining… then came Punk Royale, and nothing was ever the same again.

A long, long time ago (or at least before 2015)

Two chefs were working in other people’s kitchens. Doing their job, getting the applause. Until one day, they didn’t. That’s when something else kicked off, the start of something that would become truly one of a kind. Something we now know as Punk Royale.

Three guys meet in Åre, northern Sweden

Entrepreneur Erik Gustafsson wanted to impress his wife-to-be, so he treated her to a restaurant he’d heard of in Åre, Sweden’s best ski resort. That’s where he met the two chefs, and both a long-term friendship and partnership started to take form. The wife and one of the chefs are long gone—today, it’s just Joakim Almquist and Erik Gustafsson left.

Punk Royale opens on Folkungagatan 128

On the dodgy end of Söder in Stockholm, the original was born. A hole in the wall and a kitchen with pulse. A menu you never saw, only experienced. Caviar on the back of your hand, vodka in your glass, and an atmosphere that couldn’t be explained. Nothing polished. Everything real.

People came, and they came back. They didn’t come because we were a fine dining restaurant – they came because we weren’t.

Punk Royale Café opens next door

Boosted by the success and the fact that Punk Royale was fully booked 90 days in advance and we wanted to accommodate more guests, the back pocket Punk Royale Café opened. First as an á la carte restaurant that was also open on Sundays in order to accommodate guests from the industry, but fairly quickly we shifted to a shorter set menu. “It’s always best when we decide what the guests are having” Jocke says.

Punk Royale opens in Copenhagen

We took what we’d built and let Copenhagen make it its own. With the same spirit and soul, we welcomed a new crowd to a new Punk Royale. Still us, just on Danish ground.

It took a while to win Copenhagen’s heart, but once we did, it was just as playful, intense and unapologetic as back home.

Coco & Carmen joins the Punk Royale family

We took over Coco & Carmen, a 41 year old legacy, on Banérgatan in Stockholm. We wanted to create a neighbourhood restaurant with our DNA, just dialled to a different frequency. More royale, less punk – without losing ourselves.

Punk Royale goes Oslo

Straight after the pandemic was pronounced defeated, Punk Royale started to plan the next international opening. On a more posh address than the original in Stockholm, Punk Royale Oslo opened in 2022.

Still the same food, atmosphere, playfulness and high energy, just with a Norwegian touch.

London calling

The best is yet to come. Now, we’re stepping outside the Nordics. London, see you soon!

And what about fine dining?

Sure, we’ve been mentioned in some of the world’s most exclusive guides, and that’s fun, but honestly, it doesn’t matter to us.

What matters is what happens when you sit down, not knowing what’s coming. And when you get up again, taste still lingering, the night still ringing in your ears, you just know: I’m doing this again.

Oh – and that we’re in that Michelin Guide thing? Just a rumour!
